Abstract:Diplomsko delo analizira vbode pri zdravstvenih delavcih v Splošni bolnišnici Slovenj Gradec. V teoretičnem delu smo opisali ostre predmete v zdravstvu, incidente in najpogostejše vzroke zanje, ravnanje z ostrimi predmeti in ravnanje ob vbodu z ostrim predmetom.

Title:NEEDLESTICK INJURIES IN HEALTHCARE WORKERS
Abstract:The thesis analyses needlestick injuries among health care workers at the Slovenj Gradec General Hospital. The theoretical part describes sharp objects used in health care, incidents and their most common causes, the handling of sharp objects and the protocols related to sharp object puncture wounds. The empirical part consists of a research based on an anonymous questionnaire completed by 50 randomly selected health care workers at the Slovenj Gradec General Hospital. The aim of the research was to determine whether health care workers handle sharp objects properly and see whether they handle the infected sharp object correctly after the injury. In 96 % of the cases, health care workers are always careful when handling sharp objects. However, they fail to wear protective gloves during interventions where they may come into contact with the patient’s blood. They do not protect their own skin injuries with waterproof plasters and/or protective gloves and cover bloodied needles with protective sleeves, although it exposes them to the risk of needlestick injury. The employees were injured by a needle in 57 % of the cases and one fifth of them failed to report the incident because they were convinced that the patient whose blood was on the needle was not infected. One quarter of them found the process of filing the report too complicated. The employees thus do not respond properly after being injured by a sharp object. The research showed that health care workers are acquainted with the proper way of handling sharp objects, but they still do not follow the instructions about adequate handling.
