Abstract:V diplomskem delu so predstavljene javne prireditve v Rimu.

Title:PUBLIC SPECTACLES IN ROME
Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to present public spectacles in Rome. People without work and those who did not have anything to do in the afternoons after work were attending theater performances, races, gladiator fights and games that were organized during holiday celebrations in honor of gods. Leading politicians and rulers did not allow the Roman people to be bored or to suffer from hunger, as this could lead to dissatisfaction and uprisings. By spending large amounts of money for different events and for spoiling people, they systematically strengthened their power. Even in the case of a more or less empty state treasury they tried to provide the people of Rome with as many spectacles as possible. At the beginning of the thesis I first presented the rich history of the Roman Empire until the collapse of its western part in 476. Then I discussed the origins and the background of public spectacles, the Roman calendar, festivals and games, racing, theater, and finally, the amphitheater and gladiator fights. I found that among all entertainments, Romans preferred gladiator games as events that were celebrated all over the town.
Keywords:Rome, Roman calendar, festivals, games, races, theater, amphitheater, gladiator games, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum.
