Abstract:Avtorica predstavi v diplomskem delu osebnost in pridigarsko dejavnost Janeza Svetokriškega, najimenitnejšega slovenskega baročnega pridigarja, podrobneje pa preuči humor v njegovih pridigah. Pridigarjeva gorečnost in živahen temperament, prepleten s humorjem, sta najbolj prišla do izraza v pripovednih eksemplih. Vendar pridigarjeva kritika ni ostra, cinična ali žaljiva, ampak blaga in odpuščajoča.

Title:Humour in Janez Svetokriški’s sermons
Abstract:The author of the thesis presents the personality and the preaching activity of Janez Svetokriški (Ioannes Baptista à Sancta Cruce Vippacensi), the most distinguished Slovene baroque preacher as well as a detailed study of the use of humour in his sermons. In the period from 1691–1707, the Capuchin preacher from Sveti Križ published five extensive volumes of sermons under the Latin title Sacrum promptuarium. His sermons intentionally included narrative elements as well as elements of humour. Thus he surpassed the limits of solely liturgical elocution and contributed to a significant grammatical progress in the history of Slovene literature. The thesis presents the factors which led to Janez Svetokriški including humour in such an unusual form and contents. This is followed by a detailed analysis of typical human character traits that are used as the source of humour (in 36 stories or examples of humorous narrating), similarities of human and animal characteristics as the source of amusement (11 stories) and humorous characteristics of people of different occupations, which is also called occupational comedy (8 different occupations). Svetokriški often used humour as a means of communication, which is thus one of the main characteristics of his sermons. Humour enabled him to approach all his listeners of different classes in the most effective way. The preacher's fanaticism and lively temperament intertwined with humour are most evident in his narrative examples. In his sermon texts, the theory of humour is mainly linked to the comedy of character – he especially stressed individual human character flaws and weaknesses. In the majority of his sermons Svetokriški uses irony and even at times traverses into the area of satire. Nevertheless, the preacher's criticism is not sharp, cynical or insulting but on the contrary, mild and forgiving.
