Abstract:Jane Austen je ena bolj prepoznavnih pisateljic v literarni zgodovini. Njena dela so danes uvrščena med pomembna dela angleške literature. V diplomski nalogi sem analizirala vse njene v slovenščino prevedene romane: Razsodnost in rahločutnost, Prevzetnost in pristranost, Emma, Northangerska opatija, Mansfield park ter Prepričevanje.

Title:The Marriage Motif In The Selected Works Of Jane Austen
Abstract:Jane Austen is one of the most recognisable authors in the history of literature. Nowadays, her works are considered to be one of the most important works of English literature. In the diploma thesis, the novels translated in the Slovenian language are analysed, namely Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion. It is considered and compared, how the narrator in the works expresses his perspective on marriage, and how the author expresses her perspective on marriage through the characters and heroines. For an easier understanding of that era, the biography of the author is written and the position of women and marriage during the time of author’s life is described. Women were not equal to men, which can be seen in the novels. In all of her novels, money is an important motif; due to that, the ideas of measuring wealth in that time are described. During the analysis of individual works, the marriages are divided to marriages due to love and to marriages due to economic stability. In the comparison of novels, the couples were compared. It was noted that by describing different marriages Jane Austen presented and alerted the impact of marriage based on wrong motives. In the conclusion, it was established that the most frequently shown reason for marriage is economic stability; however, Jane Austen believed that the aforementioned reason is not enough for happy marriage and personal happiness. Her heroines are almost equal to men; the author wants to prove that only by that women can be better partners. Economic stability is important for successful marriage, but only if other motives are fulfilled as well. Jane Austen represented her idea of an ideal marriage in her heroines Anne Elliot and Elizabeth Bennet.
