Abstract:V diplomski nalogi je predstavljeno jezikoslovno delo upokojenega mariborskega pomožnega škofa dr.

Title:LINGUISTIC WORK BY JOŽEF SMEJ
Abstract:This thesis discusses the linguistic work of the auxiliary bishop emeritus of Maribor Dr. Jožef Smej. Along his demanding pastoral care as the former parish priest and dean of Murska Sobota, vicar general of Diocese of Maribor and auxiliary bishop since 1983, his scientific, literary and research work and translations are also of crucial importance. He mostly dealt with the history of Prekmurje in connection with the preservation of the national identity during the Hungarian supremacy. He laid great emphasis on the influence of life and work of Dr. Franc Ivanoczy on the maintenance of the Slovene national consciousness. His other research area includes the development of the Prekmurian literary language and the first Catholic writer in Prekmurje Mikloš Küzmič. While researching Küzmič’s literary and pastoral function, Smej conducted an in-depth study of the authenticity of biblical text translations of Števan and Mikloš Küzmič. In addition, Jožef Smej has been researching the linguistic work of other authors of the 19th and 20th century in Prekmurje, for example Peter Kolar, Janoš Kardoš, Ivan Baša, Jožef Klekl Jr. and Jožef Košič. This thesis also presents the translations of Jožef Smej, since translating is the second important area of Smej’s work. He has translated biblical texts (or co-translated), various church documents, e.g. documents of the episcopal appointment, and literary and scientific texts. The last part of the thesis includes the interview with Dr. Jožef Smej about his linguistic work and perspective on the Prekmurian literary language. It also contains the supplemented bibliography of his works: independent works (monographs, science articles, discussions) and works he was a co-author, translator or co-translator of.
