Title:TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOPOLŠICA SPA
Abstract:Spa tourism is holding the first place among tourism offers in Slovenia and is one of the most stable tourism products. The Topolšica Spa is a natural spa that with its healing hypothermal oligomineral water, mild subalpine climate, green surroundings, and high quality medical care in a nearby hospital as well as in the Spa itself provides a relaxing vacation to people with various illnesses, when, with its modern wellness centre and water park it also attracts other guests. The Spa is located in Topolšica that lies in a valley of the Toplica River in Šoštanj municipality in western part of the Šalek valley. The thermal water was first mentioned as early as in the 16th Century although its benefits were probably being exploited long before that time. In the 19th Century the Topolšica Spa was first open to the public. The built of a modern spa tourism complex has, due to favourable natural and social conditions, begun in the 1970’s. The development of the Spa also contributed to tourism development of entire Topolšica. Also, it provided for workplaces in tourism. In the Topolšica Spa tourism development there are several developmental stages. Tourism visitation in these developmental stages changes according to developments in society and tourism needs of guests. Tourism development brings positive as well as negative consequences.
