Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava simbolizem v religiozni poeziji Johna Donna in Georga Herberta. V nadaljevanju diplomsko delo obravnava religiozno, biblično simboliko Donnovih pesmi.

Title:SYMBOLISM IN JOHN DONNE AND GEORGE HERBERTS RELIGIOUS POETRY
Abstract:This diploma thesis deals with symbolism in John Donne and George Herbert’s religious poetry. In the first part of the thesis I present some of the authors’ definitions and explanations of the characteristics of metaphysical poetry. Later I focus on the political and religious situation of the period, and describe the formation of the Church of England and religious persecutions of the period. I further investigate the life of John Donne and the effect that religious instability of his period had on his poetry. Donne was a Catholic and he had many problems because of his religious beliefs, but later he became a part of the Church of England and he took an ecclesiastic position. As a young man Donne wrote a series of love and erotic poems, which were the result of his love for his wife Anne. After Anne’s death he in his poems turned the romantic and sexual feelings into love for Christ. Further the thesis discusses religious and biblical symbolism in Donne’s poems and analyses his poems “The Canonization” and “Holy Sonnets” V, VII, IX, X, XI, XVII and XVIII. In the fifth chapter I focus on the works of George Herbert. He was also an Anglican priest, and he was totally devoted to God and his parishioners. He did not write love poetry; he devoted his poems to God. With his poems he also taught the parishioners how to worship God. In the conclusion I will show how the religious and political instability of the time affected the poetry of these two authors, and how their work helps us to reimagine and understand the times they lived in.
