V obdobju najintenzivnejšega razvoja jazz glasbe zaradi njene vsesplošne popularizacije in intergracije v druge glasbene zvrsti, predvsem v zahodnem svetu (med letoma 1940 in 1970), so neortodoksni načini igranja tradicionalnih inštrumentov v povezavi z inovativnimi melodičnimi postopi v kompozicijah prebudili nek nov svet, katerega zvočni karakter ter podoba nekaterih avtorjev ostajata do dandanes prepoznavna in izjemno specifična.

Title:THELONIOUS MONK - WORK OVERVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF SELECTED COMPOSITIONS
Abstract:ABSTRACT Since the beginnings of interplay between the traditional folk music of African immigrants to America and classical Western music tradition, the world of jazz music has experienced an immense evolution. There are many instrumentalists, composers, and performers who have left their mark on the flourishing musical forms, styles, and numerous movements in jazz music. Some of them by their interpretations and improvisations, others by unique harmonic approaches to composition, the search of new forms, the integration of unconventional genres, musical expression etc. In each period of jazz history, there are notable individuals, recognisable by their specific expression, rich tones, compositional technique, or performance. In times of the most intense development of jazz music, owing to its overall popularisation and integration into other music genres, especially in the Western world (between 1940 and 1970), unorthodox ways of playing traditional instruments combined with innovative chord progressions in composition awakened a new world, in which the acoustic character and visual image of some musicians have remained distinguishable and intrinsic to the present day. As one of the most visible composers and pianists in the history of jazz, Thelonius Monk is ranked second among the most widely performed and recorded jazz musicians, despite his less extensive body of work. His life was marked by a total dedication to music, a search for new musical dimensions, and the formation of a strong personal expression. His works are of distinctive character and sound, recognisable in each of his musical pieces. This phenomeon is all the more interesting from the position of a jazz vocalist, as a considerable number of excellent texts have been written for many of his compositions from the 1960's onwards. With regard to the quite specific sound of Monk's compositions, it seems odd that the melodies of his compositions work so well in vocal adaptations, as owing to their chord progression, at first sight their sound is not lyrical or melodius.
