Abstract:Prevajanje je profesionalna dejavnost strokovnjakov in izvedencev določenega jezikovnega in medkulturnega področja, ki prenašajo in ustrezno preoblikujejo izvirno besedilo v ciljno. V empiričnem delu smo s pomočjo analize spletnega anketnega vprašalnika poskušali ugotoviti trenutno stanje med slovenskimi prevajalci, kakšno stopnjo izobrazbe imajo in kako pridejo do prevodnih naročil.

Title:Translation as a Profession and its Social Status on the Slovene Market
Abstract:Translation is a profession of experts and connoisseurs of a language, as well as its intercultural field. Translators appropriately reshape and transmit source texts into target texts. Unfortunately, nowadays it is widely believed, that anyone capable of understanding and speaking a few words of a foreign language is also capable of being a translator. The present diploma thesis attempts to analyse the current social status of translators in the Republic of Slovenia from a professional standpoint. The conducted analysis is determined by three interrelated factors: economic status, social power and social status, the later being contingent on education, occupation, ambition and goals made by individuals or specific professions. The theoretic part of the thesis tries to define the translation profession on the Slovene market, the status of the translator, competences characteristic for an educated translator, employment opportunities and it stresses the translator’s code of ethics. In the empiric part of the thesis we attempt, with the help of an online survey, to identify the current state of Slovene translators, their level of education and how they acquire translation jobs. With a comparative analysis of pricing policies on translating technical and commercial texts at translation agencies, self-employed translators and translators who participated in the of the conducted survey, we have been able to gain some insight into the translation demands of said texts, we then compared the acquired results and on their example attempted to demonstrate the so called “dumping prices” on the Slovene market. With this, we were able to establish that, because of a trend of self-employment and copyright contract work (both being a consequence of market saturation and unfair competition), a regulation of the translation profession is necessary for upholding a stable social status of translators.
