Abstract:Pričujoča diplomska naloga obravnava izzive verbalnega humorja v četrti sezoni britanske humoristične televizijske nadaljevanke Črnigad (1989). Prvo poglavje vsebuje uvod v obravnavano tematiko in kratek opis prvin četrte sezone obravnavane nadaljevanke, pomembnih za obravnavo v pričujoči diplomski nalogi.

Title:TRANSLATING VERBAL HUMOUR IN THE BRITISH COMEDY SERIES BLACKADDER GOES FORTH
Abstract:This diploma thesis observes the challenges of translating verbal humour in the British TV comedy series Blackadder Goes Forth (1989). The thesis is divided into the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part is divided into four chapters. The first chapter features an introduction to the content to be observed and a brief overview of the elements of this British comedy series that are important for the research focus of the diploma thesis. The second chapter features an in-depth look at the notion of humour, particularly verbal humour. The third chapter includes a definition of the process of subtitling, an overview of subtitling strategies and a look at the concept of translating humour in subtitles. The fourth chapter features an in-depth look at the particular types of humour included in Blackadder Goes Forth (1989) that will be observed with regard to the translation or subtitling strategies during the process of rendering humour, or preserving the humorous potential of the original text in the target-text subtitles. These types of humour are allusions – particularly historical, cultural and literary; double entendres; and malapropisms. The empirical section features an analysis of the translation strategies based on a back translation of the Slovene solutions into English (Chapter 5) and a concluding observation of the success rate as well as the outcomes of the establishment of either formal or dynamic equivalence according to Nida (1964) between the original text and the target-text subtitles (Chapter 6).
Keywords:subtitling, subtitles, humour, allusion, double entendre, malapropism, formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence, Blackadder
