Title:HAYRACKS IN SLOVENIA AND METHODS OF THE RELOCATION OF HAYRACKS
Abstract:Hayracksaretraditional Slovenian farm structures for drying and storing grain, hay, and other crops. Some types of hayracks, such as linked hayracks, were also used for storingwagons and other farm machinery. Hayracksarean exceptional achievement of traditional carpentry and adistinctSlovenian feature. The first part of the thesisprovides an overview of thecontemporary interdisciplinary research findings on hayracks in Slovenia from the viewpoint of their development, typology, comparisons with similar structureselsewherearoundtheglobe, wood as building material, and other construction characteristics, as well as the ownership, status, functional, and social aspects of hayracks. Three different methodsthat builders can use are presented:(1) moving the entire hayrack using modern cranes, (2) disassembling the hayrack into its structural componentsand reassembling itat the new location, and (3) moving the entire hayrack using rollers. The first methodismade possible by modern technology, and the second and third methods werealreadyused by builders in the past. With each method, the thesis focuses on the construction aspects of moving hayracks.
