Abstract:V empiričnem diplomskem delu z naslovom Otrokovo doživljanje bolezni smo podrobneje opredelili odzive otroka na bolezen in na bivanje v bolnišnici oziroma hospitalizacijo.

Title:A CHILD'S PERCEPTION OF ILLNESS
Abstract:The empirical undergraduate thesis entitled The Child's Perception of the Disease defines in detail the child’s reactions to the disease and to the hospital stay or hospitalization. A sick child may be taken care of at home, or, if necessary, he is included in the treatment process in the hospital, so, for some time, he must leave the home environment which is replaced by a foreign environment, the hospital. The theoretical part of the undergraduate thesis wholly defines the child's perception of the disease, while the empirical part focuses on the child's perception of the hospitalization. The purpose of the empirical part was to find out what is the reaction of a preschool child to the hospital. The survey was conducted by the questionnaires which were given in a printed form to the parents and the nurses employed at the children’s hospital departments. The data were analyzed by the SPSS software using statistical methods. It was discovered that there are significant differences in the frequency of behaviors expressed during the various stages of the hospitalization process. According to the findings, the most significant differences appear in the negative forms of behavior which are the most commonly expressed at the child’s hospital admission, and the least commonly expressed at the discharge from the hospital. Among the positive forms, the significance of the differences is low, and the physical hospitalism was not observed. The aim was also to discover whether there are differences in the child’s perception of the hospitalization according to gender, age, type of disease, parent’s presence and previous experience with hospitalization. As expected, the differences in the behavior were expressed between the age groups, however, the differences between genders were not statistically significant. It was also expected that the differences will be present between children with chronic and acute diseases, but they did not prove themselves to be statistically significant. It was discovered that most of the departments where preschoolers stay are adapted to their needs (children are visited by a hospital teacher, playroom is available, parents rooming-in is permitted) and that the child and the family have appropriate help at disposal if the child has difficulty adjusting to the hospital.
