Title:Growing and Phytoremediational Potential of Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.)
Abstract:Cleaning of contaminated soil is a challenge, especially extraction of heavy metals. Phytoremediation is a natural way of cleaning such soil. Plants that accumulate more than 0.1 % of Pb, Co, Cr or more than 1 % of Mn, Ni or Zn are called hyperaccumulators. One of the potential hyperaccumulators is hemp (Cannabis sativa L). Based on literature review (Sciencedirect, ProQuest and Web of Science) and preliminary research, the effects of variety and plant population in hemp on phytoremediation and production were studied. A combination of early sowing and high density of plants (around 250 plants/m2) has the highest impact on hemp yield. Research shows that hemp accumulates 1.1 to 136.9 mg Pb/kg of dry matter. Regarding the expected yield of 10 t/ha, a plant should accumulate more than 10 kg Pb/ha, which hemp does not reach with the uptake of 10 t/ha. By adding chelates, the concentration of accumulated Pb rises, but is still too low to justify classifying hemp as a hyperaccumulator of heavy metals (namely Pb). However, hemp accumu-lates higher concentrations of Pb in comparison with sunflower (H. annus L.), canola (B. napus L.), flax (L. usitatissimum L.) and maize (Zea myas L.). A combination of two Pb accumulating plants in a crop rotation could have a positive effect on Pb accumulation, for example hemp and canola. Contaminated hemp can potentially be used in building, in paper industry or for composites. Regardless, such hemp is not recom-mended for ingestion or textiles.
