Abstract:Magistrsko delo analizira najnovejše romane Sarah Dunant, britanske pisateljice, zgodovinarke, urednice in publicistke.

Title:HISTORICAL NOVELS BY SARAH DUNANT
Abstract:This Master's thesis analyses the latest novels by British writer, historian, editor and publicist Sarah Dunant. It also presents an overview of the theory of the historical novel, its definition that changed over time, its beginnings, and the development of the genre since the 19th century. Also presented are the genre designations as well as selected typologies, through which in the analytical part four historical novels by Sarah Dunant, published between 2003 and 2012, are analyzed. The selected novels The Birth of Venus, In the Company of the Courtesan, and Sacred Hearts, which represent a trilogy of novels about the Renaissance and thematize predominantly the role of women in Renaissance Italy, and the novel Blood and Beauty, which is a fictional biography of the famous historical family Borgia, are set in early modern Renaissance Italy. Each novel is set in one of the Italian cities: Florence, Venice, Ferrara, and Rome. The analysis covers the external and internal structure of the novels, as well as the interdependent analysis of the genre according to selected genre determinations and typology, and the presentation of certain Italian cities that constitute the motive, theme, and the framework of selected novels. Sarah Dunant, who had become captivated by history and the art of Renaissance Italy, convincingly intertwines in her novels historical facts with fiction, thus creating exciting, sensually rich and multi-layered novels that immediately draw the reader into a web of love, art, political and religious tensions, and, of course, into a time of Renaissance Italy’s cities. She constructed her novels using the historic building scaffolding composed of many contemporary sources, testimonies of renowned scholars and art historians, all of which she implemented into a fictional story, which in its own time and space would be completely plausible and certainly interesting.
