Abstract:Diplomsko delo predstavlja oris mestne občine Ptuj v letih 1924 in 1925 v luči arhivskega gradiva ter slovenskih časnikov Jutro, Tabor, Slovenec in Straža.

Title:A throb of Ptuj in the years 1924 and 1925
Abstract:An outline of Municipality of Ptuj in years 1924 and 1925 is given in the diploma thesis; the outline is made pursuant to the archive materials and Slovenian newspapers Jutro, Tabor, Slovenec and Straža. Before the overthrow, Ptuj was a pillar of German, but became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after World War One; the management of the urban municipality was passed over to the Slovenians. In the new country, Germans of Ptuj became minority. People’s parties entered into alliance and participated in the first free municipality election in 1925 against Germans. Although the agitation of Germans was persistent, the People’s Party had won. The Municipality was poor, the companies had to deal with the citizens’ downturn of the purchasing capacity, and with smaller export due to the loss of the market. Nevertheless, the long-term effort for electricity grid was realized. In consequence, the municipal gasworks was closed, and the local agents took over the maintaining of Drava Bridge, thus the efforts to cancel the bridge toll services had begun. Institutes and schools of Ptuj were facing lack of pupils and teachers, cancellations of some classes and institutions, and financial crisis. Slovenian culture and educational societies, which carried out activities in Ptuj, endeavoured to fulfil given objectives; their main mission was mainly national awakening. German societies with mostly German participants still had German national spirit. Apparent, they assimilated in the new country, but national differences still remained in all aspects of public life.
