Title:TRANSLATING HUMOR AND CULTURALLY SPECIFIC COMPONENTS IN THE SERIES M*A*S*H
Abstract:Translation is a complex and difficult process. In order to produce a good translation, the translator must have extensive knowledge of the original and target language, as well as both cultures. The task becomes even more challenging when the translation is intended for television, e.g. sitcoms, where various limitations regarding length and duration of a subtitle come into play. This diploma paper analyzes the Slovenian subtitles of the sitcom M*A*S*H and the various translation challenges that arose due to the humorous and culture-specific phrases used. Further, the paper defines the notions of humour, culture and translation. The translation strategies of Nedergaard-Larsen, which can be applied when translating culture-bound phrases, were summed up as well. The empirical part of the diploma paper deals with the translation challenges in the discussed sitcom. Finally, we propose some alternative suggestions for specific cases, where we deemed that a better solution was possible.
