Abstract:
Po nekaterih virih literature imajo ličinke hrošča mokarja vrste Tribolium confusum sposobnost hranjenja z nekaterimi polimeri. V prebavilih nosijo bakterije, ki so sposobne biološko razgraditi nekaj vrst polimerov v CO2 in organsko snov. Izvedli smo laboratorijski poskus, v katerem smo hrošče gojili v posodicah in smo jim – kot prehranski vir – nudili stiropor, stirodur in PVC (polivinil-klorid). Slednje tri vire so imeli na voljo kot samostojne vire hrane ali pa v kombinaciji z jabolkom in otrobi. Ugotovili smo, da ličinke mokarjev lahko uživajo stiropor in stirodur, PVC-ja pa ne.

Title:
Biological decomposition of some polymers with the help of mealworms of Tribolium confusum du Val species
Abstract:
According to literature the larval form of the mealworm beetle Tribolium confusum has the ability to nourish itself by some types of polymer. In the gastrointestinal tract they bear specific bacteria capable of biological decomposition of polymers into CO2 and organic matter. To test precisly which substances can be decomposed by mealworms a laboratory experiment was conducted in which mealworms were kept inside containers and were feed with styrofoam, expanded styrofoam and PVC (polyvinyl-chloride). The worms were feed with these three polymers as the only food source or in combinations with apples and grain husks. Based on the findings a conclusion is made that the worms are capable of decomposing styrofoam and expanded styrofoam, but not PVC.
