Title:Effect of temperature on pigmentation and body size of antlion larvae Euroleon nostras
Abstract:A changing environment affects all organisms that lives within it. Environmental temperature is one of the key factors important to organisms, while also being quite variable. It affects the biochemical and physiological processes in living organisms. The effect of temperature is most noticeable in ectothermic organisms, whose body temperature depends on the temperature of their environment. In this Master's thesis we investigated the effect of temperature on the body size, pigmentation, development and activity of E. nostras larvae. We found that first and second instar larvae were active for the longest amount of time, which means that their winter period of inactivity was the shortest, while the third instar larvae remained in diapause for the longest period. The results also indicate that larvae reared at lower temperatures exhibited a slower rate of development than larvae reared at the higher temperature. There were also noticeable differences in larvae's pigmentation. Larvae reared in the cooler temperature regime had darker coloration on the dorsal side of the head and prothorax in comparison to larvae reared in higher temperature regime.
