Title:COMPARISON OF PERSONALITY TRAITS OF HOSPITALIZED ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR NON-HOSPITALIZED PEERS
Abstract:Maintaining the welfare of patients during hospitalization has been one of the most important goals of all health workers for decades. Thus it is not unusual that in Slovenia we started to implement the principle of hospital humanization a few years ago. However, implementation of the principles of hospital humanization in itself does not mean that it is actually effective and that it helps to improve the well-being of patients. The aim of our study was therefore to examine and compare the personality traits of hospitalized adolescents and their non-hospitalized peers. For the purpose of exploring the links between certain dimensions and sub-dimensions of personality and presence or absence of hospitalization, as example of stressful experiences, we used two measuring instruments for measuring personality traits. These were HANES scale and VMR-OM questionnaire. Our sample (N = 102) included a group of hospitalized and a group of non-hospitalized adolescents. Through Compare Means analysis of the groups we found out that there were no statistically significant differences between groups in the measured personality traits (neuroticism, fearful/insecure, shy, antagonism, negative affect and extraversion-activity). It also did not detect statistically significant differences between groups of younger and older hospitalized adolescents in sub-dimension of negative affect. On this basis we concluded that short-term hospitalization with other observed humanization measures represents an example of good practice and does not represent a risk factor for the evolving personality of hospitalized adolescents.
