Abstract:	Pričujoče magistrsko delo že v naslovu opozarja na eksistencialni in identitetni problem romanesknega subjekta v izbranih Žabotovih romanih Pastorala, Stari pil, Volčje noči in Sukub. Vsi, razen zadnjega, ki je Žabotov t. i. »urbani« prvenec, so postavljeni v morbidno močvirsko okolje, prostor brezmejne ravnice, ki s svojimi mitološkimi in polpoganskimi spremljevalci že ob prvem stiku svoje popotnike in večne iskalce napolni s patološkim hrepenenjem po Bližnjem in absolutni resnici. Blodnjava motnja postaja protagonistov bivanjski označevalec, ki ga vodi skozi temne, plesnive in vlažne hodnike zamejenih prostorov kolektivnega, s težkim zrakom prepojene beznice, skozi brezbožne ustanove božjega, vse do podstrešij stolpnic, kjer bi bilo mogoče najti še kako varno zatočišče pred »zadušljivimi« načeli kolektivnega. Paranoja postaja vzvod subjektovega večnega bega pred zasledovalnim principom fatalno erotičnega in kolektivnega, pri čemer oba pridobivata destruktivne razsežnosti. Rešitev eksistenčnega položaja in razkrajajoče se identitete je za protagonista možna le s pobegi v trans-resnico ali z nadevanjem »mask« po dolžnosti. Hrepenenje po idealni ljubezni do Bližnjega se z vsakim nadaljnjim korakom izkaže kot prazen up. Junakovi napori po rešitvi se kljub zasledovalnim in omejevalnim principom v celoti nikoli ne končajo. V eksistenčnih prehodih se protagonist psihično in fizično znajde »na meji« in šele na zadnji bivanjski postaji jo za hip prestopi. Tu ugleda pravega Bližnjega in spozna absolutno Resnico. Pot Žabotovega romanesknega subjekta se nikoli ne konča. Na svoji zadnji postaji se vselej vrne na začetek.

Title:	The question of existence and depersonalization of character in Žabot’ş novels Pastorala, Stari pil, Sukub and Volčje noči
Abstract:	Even the title of the master's thesis you are now holding draws attention to the existential and identity problems the novelistic protagonist faces in a selection of Žabot's novels Pastorala, Stari pil, Volčje noči and Sukub. All of them, except the last, which is reffered to as Žabot's »urban« debut, are placed in a morbid wetland, the space of boundless plain and mythological and half-pagan accomplices, the space that instantly fills its travellers and eternal seekers with pathological desire for a companion and absolute truth. Delusion is becoming a protagonist's existential mark and it leads him through a dark, moldy and damp corridors of the edged spaces of collective, with heavy air impregnated pubs, through the ungodly institution of God, all the way up to the attics of skyscrapers, where it would be possible to find very much safe haven against »stifling« principles of collective. Paranoia is becoming a trigger for the main character's eternal escape from the hunting principle of fatally erotic and collective, both of which are gaining destructive proportions. A solution to an existential situation and decaying identity is only possible with the escapes to a trans-truth or putting on »masks« by duty. Longing for an ideal love for a fellow man with each further step turns out as an empty hope. The hero's efforts to find a solution, despite the pursuing and restrictive principles, never end entirely. In his existential crossings the protagonist finds himself mentally and physically »on the border« and only at the final existential station he changes stops for a moment. Here he recognizes the real fellow man and absolute truth. A journey of Žabot's novalistic hero is never-ending. The end of the journey always takes him back to the start.
