Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava religijo in politiko Feničanov. Tirski kralji so v času feničanske ekspanzije v Sredozemlje kult Melkarta spremenili v glavni instrument svoje trgovske in kolonialne politike.

Title:PHOENICIAN RELIGION AND POLITICS
Abstract:This graduation thesis is about Phoenician religion and politics. Phoenician religion evolved from the Canaanite religion in the city-states on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The geographical isolation and competition policy of the trade-oriented cities has led to the establishment of a local pantheon at each city-state. At the top of the pantheon in each city was a pair of male and female gods. They were god of agriculture and fertility goddess, known under different names in different cities. Only one god of the pair was worshiped as the patron of the city. In Byblos it was Baalath, Astarta in Sidon and Melkart in Tyre. Priesthood in the cities were recruited mainly from the wealthiest families. The function of the head priest was held by the members of the royal family, in some cases the king assumed it himself. During the Phoenician expansion in the Mediterranean, the kings of Tyre made the cult of Melqart into the main instrument of their commercial and colonial policy. The influence of religion on politics is thus the most visible in the case of god Melqart, whose function in the western colonies was both religious and political.
