Abstract:Tema magistrske naloge opisuje razvoj liberalne politike v Celju v času prehoda iz avstro-ogrske monarhije od prve jugoslovanske države (Kraljevina SHS) leta 1918 vse do prvih lokalnih/občinskih volitev leta 1921 – tik pred sprejemom vidovdanske ustave.

Abstract:This master’s thesis talks about the development of political liberalism in Celje at the time of transition from Austro-Hungarian Empire to the first Yugoslav state (Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes) in 1918 until the first local/municipal elections held in 1921 – just before the first constitution of the newly formed state (named Vidovdan constitution) was adopted. The town in focus is Celje (contemporary German name of the town was Cilli) and its surrounding wider region. The thesis also deals with cultural, social, and economical developments in Celje and its region at the time of the transition, and provides an insight into political and national developments of the region in the last decades of Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The main subject of the thesis is representation of ways in which the liberal party in Celje managed to take power right after the disintegration of the previous state, according to the agreement between main Slovene political parties. The municipal administration was taken over mostly by Slovene liberals just after the previous German municipal authority ceased to exist and they kept that influence with the assistance of the state until the first local elections. In surrounding district region of Celje, the liberals never gained noteworthy political position except in some small subregional centres. The Liberal Party lost its significance in Celje and its region after two workers’ parties, the socialdemocrats and the communists, became more influential. Liberal party was additionally weakened when two new liberal parties, agrarian liberals and national socialists, emerged. In rural regions, the liberals had no strongholds, since there was predominantly space only for the influential national catholics party.
