Abstract:Magistrska naloga preučuje vprašanje tujega jezika (TJ) pri dodiplomskih študentih nejezikovnih programov Univerze v Mariboru.

Title:Foreign Languages for Students of Non-Language Majors at the University of Maribor
Abstract:The following Master Thesis introduces foreign languages used by undergraduate students of Non-Language Majors at the University of Maribor. The emphasis is laid upon learning foreign languages among students, their self-evaluation of a certain foreign language, their informal and formal usage of foreign languages and also on their estimation of factors influencing the rate of success within learning foreign languages. Within this context the grade of a foreign language at the Matura examinations as well as specific studies at different faculties has been under control. Some 150 students attending the 2nd and the 3rd year of natural science studies, social science studies and technical science studies at the University of Maribor have been involved. Specific data has been obtained with the help of a questionnaire consisting of descriptive and numerical estimation ranking. The results have shown that the respondents find learning foreign languages outside school more important than formal learning at school. It has been estimated that the success in learning foreign languages lies in contacts with people from other countries, in attending the Erasmus student exchange programs and in an early foreign language learning. The latter also has a big influence in further success at the Matura examination of foreign languages. Respondents having got better grades at the Matura examination showed more self confidence in self-evaluation and at the same time read more literature in foreign language in comparison with the students who have not achieved such good grades. The best good grades at the Matura examination have been achieved by the social science students, the most excellent grades have been achieved by the natural science students who are in most cases also the most self-initiative and use study literature in other languages most often. Almost one third of all the respondents among the undergraduate students at the University of Maribor has not learnt any additional foreign language, a good half of them learn English. In future our state language policy should strive towards a vertical rise of teaching foreign languages also among the undergraduate studies. Only the knowledge of English as a foreign language will certainly not be enough in order to present young people successfully as well as vigorously on the European economic market.
