Title:Some of the 10 frame contexts and activities in preschool education
Abstract:The graduation thesis entitled Some of the 10-frame Contexts and Activities in Preschool Education, contains two parts; one theoretical and one empirical. The theoretical part introduces a few didactic manipulatives which can be used in preschool for developing a sense of important number benchmarks. We focused on the 5- and 10-frames, and, for this reason, included the article Developing “Five-ness” in Kindergarten, written by Janice Novakowski, wherein the author presents her research, during which she explored preschool children’s understanding of the number 5. Doing this, she recorded important activities involving the number 5 and presented her findings in the aforementioned article. The benchmark number 5 is an important part of understanding the concept of numbers. The next important benchmark is the number 10, developed with the use of the 10-frame. Because of that, this thesis paper introduces the 10-frame as a teaching manipulative and, additionally, includes information about its manufacture and some activities connected with the 10-frame. The empirical part of the thesis paper presents the research we carried out with 29 children of ages between 4 and 5. First, we performed an initial test to test their prior knowledge, then each child took part in 4 activities connected to the 10-frame. After this, we performed the initial test again, this time having the role of the final test. The results were gathered on an observation sheet and then inserted into tables and graphs, allowing us to test the effectiveness of the 10-frame as a mathematic teaching manipulative and the effect it had on the children’s mathematical thinking.
