Title:East german intelligence service hva and its impact on the political situation in east germany
Abstract:Like a spider, the Stasi or also known as the Ministry of State Security, knit its network throughout the country. Always ready like a sword and shield, which was essentially a slogan of the notorious state authority, spied on all the corners of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and manipulated people’s lives through its repressive approach. The Ministry of National Security was the central authority in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR), which preserved power of the only permitted political organization Socialist Unity Party the way that all aspects of life in the DDR were fully monitored. Part of the Ministry of State Security was Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung - HVA, which dealt with classic intelligence operations. HVA was established very soon after the founding of the DDR, namely in 1951, at that time as the Institute for Research in the economic field. Anton Ackermann was the first head of the agency, and only after the leadership of the notorious Markus Wolf, the service was renamed as HVA. The Structural model of HVA was exactly the same as the Soviet KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoye Bezopasnosti), which confirms that the Soviets were "pulling the strings". The main task of HVA was to gather information on development in the Federal Republic of Germany and in West Berlin. Information and data were collected from all major areas of life, such as politics, economy etc. The service was extremely well organized by departments; each of them covered their respective area. The HVA Cabinet led and managed all these departments. Under the Wolf leadership HVA became one of the most successful intelligence services in history.
