Title:Transport of pollutants in rivers
Abstract:Rivers and watercourses have always been the most basic primary source for both drinking water and energy in the development of civilizations. With technological advancement, we started to exploit the rivers and used them both for transport systems and for the production of energy. In doing so, we have forgotten the consequences that occur in pollutants entering the river and spreading beyond the river and affecting the aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Depending on the type of pollutants and a type of pollution we can take action through scenarios, we also prevent ecological catastrophe. The Drava River is one of the leaders in Slovenia in terms of generating energy from the water and use for everyday life, and any pollution on the river would have significant consequences. Using the WASP program and the available data, the water quality modeling for the Drava River was carried out, which led to the creation of scenarios. The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the measurement of the water quality of the Drava River decreased in both scenarios. Depending on the time and distance at which we performed the measurements, we can say that the Drava River was the most heavily burdened on the first point of measurement at the Maribor island, where the concentration of pollution was the largest and the least burdened at the measuring point at the Old Bridge in Maribor, which is about 3.2 kilometers from the source of pollution. The temperature of the dissolved oxygen in the river was also greatly influenced by the temperature of the Drava River, so the dissolved oxygen was lowered by increasing the temperature, which was also evident from the results in scenarios.
