Abstract:Magistrska naloga obravnava problematiko nasilja mladostnikov nad starši. Najpogosteje omenjeni vzroki nasilja mladostnikov nad starši so: izkušnje z izpostavljenostjo nasilju v družini in medvrstniškemu nasilju, vsedopuščajoča vzgoja, avtoritarna vzgoja, zloraba različnih substanc ter vrstniška družba.

Title:Violence within four walls: adolescent-to-parent violence
Abstract:The thesis focuses on the problems concerning the violence of youth against their parents. The first remarks of this problem go back to late 1970’s and since then, the research into this type of domestic violence has developed rapidly, especially in the United States and Canada, but there hasn’t been any empirical study of the characteristics of a violent behavior of adolescents against parents in Slovenia so far. By examining the personal experiences of adolescents who carry out violence against parents, the parents who are victims of such violence and the professional workers, we wanted to identify the factors and characteristics of violent behavior of adolescents against parents. We chose to approach the examination with the qualitative research, implementing it with semi-structured interviews. The results let us to believe that psychological, financial and physical violence are the most frequent forms of violence adolescents carry out against their parents. And also, that mother especially is more exposed to their violence. Usually, a violent behavior occurs during early adolescent stage (between 12 and 15 years of age), although the occurrence of the behavior before the age of ten must not be neglected. The most commonly mentioned causes for this kind of behavior against parents are: experiences of domestic violence and violence perpetrated by peers, permissive education, authoritarian education, abuse of various substances and peer group. The occurrence of this kind of violence is more frequent in a single-parent family, where mother decided to leave the abusive partner and to live independently with her child. The area of domestic violence in our country is regulated by the 2008’s act on prevention of domestic violence. Amended and supplemented in 2016, the act provides formal powers to institutions dealing with domestic violence. But the scope of violence against parents by young people is not specifically defined in this act, or any other existing legislation. There is also a sense of concealment in our country, concerning domestic violence, for parents often feel too ashamed or guilty to speak up about the abuse. Consequently, they don’t seek appropriate help.
