Title:Physiological characteristics of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) along a temperature gradient
Abstract:Invasiveness of alien species is related to their eco-physiological responses to stressors. Pistia stratiotes is invasive tropical plant. With presented results from this master thesis we wanted to evaluate and determine the physiological characteristics of species along the temperature gradient in the backwater Topla near Prilipe. The backwater riverbed was divided into 10 locations, which differed according to water temperature. We assessed which water temperature is optimal for the best growth-rate and best vegetative reproduction. We measured how the chlorophyll a photochemical efficiency of the leaf and the greenness of leaf (SPAD value) depend on environment temperature. Results showed the optimum temperature is between 25 °C and 30 °C. Plants did not grow in temperatures below 21 °C, as well as above 35 °C, when they started to senescence. Water temperature impacted the rosette temperature, which were similar, and leaf temperature, which was approximately 1 °C cooler. Significant impact was shown also for the air temperature and nutrients and pH. Germination tests showed that besides vegetative reproduction also viable seeds are present, which survive temperatures below 0 °C and are present in the sediment seed bank.
