Title:Determination of formaldehyde in different textile products
Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to determine the formaldehyde content in products made from cellulose, which are offered by various stores with textile products. There is a great probability that the aforementioned harmful compound is uncontrollably embedded in the material as a result of the inevitable processing needed for achieving the resistance of textile materials to creasing. It is concluded that the formaldehyde content will be higher in lower priced products compared to higher-priced products. Materials, which are processed to prevent creasing, often contain more than 1000 and even more than 2000 ppm of free formaldehyde or formaldehyde, which is released during hydrolysis and is known to be potentially carcinogenic. For this purpose, we used the method for testing formaldehyde in accordance with the applicable SIST EN ISO 14184-1 standard. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-creasing finishes, we carried out the test method Determining the levelling of creases of a horizontally wrinkled specimen by measuring the angle of recovery in accordance with the applicable SIST EN 22313 standard. Based on the obtained results, it is concluded that the content or rather the prescribed limit of formaldehyde was not exceeded in any of the samples.
