Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Duševno manjrazvite osebe imajo pogosto težave zaradi nezmožnosti verbalne komunikacije, zato mora oseba, ki z njimi dela, komunikacijo prilagoditi njihovim zmožnostim in uporabljati t. i. terapevtsko komunikacijo, ki bo spodbujala njihovo rast in samostojnost.

Title:The importance of communication with mentally less developed persons
Abstract:Theoretical background: Mentally less developed people often have difficulties due to their inability of verbal communication, therefore the person who works with them, should adapt the communication to their abilities and use therapeutic communication that will foster their growth and independence. The purpose of the study was to present the communication between medical personnel and mentally less-developed persons and to determine its importance in health care. Research Methodology: In the theoretical part the descriptive method was used. The study based on the quantitative methodology was performed by means of a questionnaire. It included 59 employees in nursing and care in the centre. Results: Respondents are aware that communication is vital in dealing with mentally underdeveloped persons. Most people use therapeutic communication at work. They also face various obstacles, but they try to alleviate them with kind words, understanding, etc. Up-skilling and increasing the number of employees would contribute to the higher quality of treatment of mentally underdeveloped persons in their view. Discussion and conclusion: Employees in the centre are aware of the importance of therapeutic communication, and therefore more likely to use it in their work. The most important thing is to ensure therapeutic communication to mentally underdeveloped persons, which will establish and maintain good relationships and provide quality health care.
