Title:Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in food products in slovenia
Abstract:Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are commonly occurring secondary plant metabolites that can cause poisoning of humans, as well as animals. In Slovenia, there is very little known about the health risk that consumers face with the use of nutritional and cosmetic products from plants containing PAs. In our survey, we used a descriptive method based on the questionnaire. We wanted to find out whether Slovenians are aware of how hazardous PAs are, and how often we use products that might contain PAs. Therefore, our main objective was to quantify the intake of these substances among Slovenians; and with the help of already existing risk assessments done in other countries for teas and honey, estimate how much we are exposed to PAs. The results showed that Slovenians do not yet know the hazard of PAs, and therefore are not aware of their impact on humans’ health. It was also found that PAs containing products are not consumed often, so we can estimate that most of consumers are not yet exposed to PAs at an unacceptable level. However, since recently an increasing trend has been observed toward self-medication with a variety of herbs, it is definitely necessary to inform people about the hazard of PAs in herbs and the consequences of their use. Despite the low intake of PAs determined in our study, we have to be aware that they accumulate in the body. Therefore, in the future it is necessary to minimize their intake and better regulate their content in nutritional products with legislation.
