Abstract:Koristne mikrobne kulture so značilne za črevesno mikrofloro zdravih ljudi.

Title:Students' knowledge about the importance of microbiota and probiotics for health
Abstract:Beneficial microbial cultures are typical for the intestinal microflora of healthy people. The gastrointestinal tract contains more than 80% of the immune system cells with their base in the intestine. The main purpose of the probiotics consumption is to preserve, restore and enrich the intestinal microbiota with beneficial bacteria, which have a significant role in strengthening the metabolism, immune system and health. A survey questionnaire was prepared for the students of Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences (FKBV) and the students of the Faculty of Medicine (MF) at the University of Maribor, in order to determine their level of awareness about the microbiota importance in relation to health and their level of knowledge of probiotic products. The questionnaire was answered by 60 students from each faculty. The analysis of results was carried out with the statistical software SPSS. It has been proved that MF students are generally better informed about probiotics than FKBV students. It was observed that at both faculties, female students do not consume more probiotics than their male colleagues and that those respondents who consume probiotics do not complain about their prices. However, the fact that MF students do not consider probiotics as a functional food, whereas FKBV students do, was a significant result. In conclusion, students should become more informed about natural products, which have a beneficial effect on human health.
