Abstract:Cilj magistrske naloge je bil pojasniti ontogenetski vidik morfometrične variabilnosti lobanje navadnega polha (Glis glis). V primerjavi z evropsko tekunico (Spermophilus citellus) lobanja navadnega polha raste do dvakrat hitreje.

Title:Ontogenetic variation in the skull of the edible dormouse, glis glis (linnaeus, 1766)
Abstract:The purpose of the master’s thesis was to clarify the morphometric variability of the edible dormouse skull (Glis glis) from an ontogenetic perspective. The material was composed of different age groups, from young, leaving their nest, to adult animals. The sample represents 233 dormice skulls collected in Krim, Slovenia. A morphometric skull analysis was carried out on the ventral surface of the skull. In the ventral-view photographs 22 ground control points were determined. The specimens were categorized into 6 age groups based on molar eruption. Employing geometric morphometry methods, it was demonstrated that there are no gender-dependent differences in size or form of the skull, thus analyses were carried out jointly for both genders. The age group 6 stood out in both size and form, as expected, since it included one year old specimens or older. A relatively larger auditory bulla and tooth row were detected in younger specimens, indicating an allometric growth throughout the post-natal development. Different parts of the skull are not growing equally fast or they grow in a different stage of life. For dormice a later breeding season is characteristic. In addition, the skull of the edible dormouse is growing twice as fast as the one of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus).
