Abstract:Magistrska naloga v teoretičnem delu temelji na obravnavi branja in pisanja otrok/učencev v prvem razredu. Podatke sem nato obdelala s pomočjo programa SPSS.

Title:The monitoring of first grade pupils' progress in their initial reading using a literacy test
Abstract:Theoretical part of this master's thesis is based on children's reading and writing in first grade. Main focus is on connection between vocal awareness and initial reading, the latter is extra important for children. First, we define elimination of illiteracy, its methods and stages of reading. We describe how to develop children’s pre-reading and pre-writing skills. Reading with understanding is also important. We describe different factors that affect child’s reading skills, such as reading motivation and the speed of reading. We must not forget about child’s speech development, so it is described in individual chapter. Since many children have reading problems, we decided to describe those problems in this thesis. The main focus is on identifying, where these problems occur and how to solve them. We define the role of parents and teachers when it comes to reading problems. Writing is also included in literacy test; therefore we describe pupils’ first grade writing at the end of this thesis. Empirical part is based on monitoring pupils’ progress in initial reading in first grade by using literacy test. We studied reading development for two periods; when entering primary school and after six months of learning. The research is based on descriptive and non-experimental casual methods of empirical pedagogical research. We applied simple descriptive statistics for dependent samples, t-test. Research is based on non-randomized casual sample of first grade pupils from five primary schools, located in the area of National Education Institute Slovenia, Maribor. The sample includes approximately 260 pupils. We gathered information with test for first graders. The test was the same in the beginning and later in April. We processed gathered information by using programme for statistical data analysis SPSS.
