Abstract:To diplomsko delo obravnava naklonske glagole v angleškem prevodu Zakona o kazenskem postopku Republike Slovenije. V prevodu zakona smo poiskali vse angleške modalne glagole (modal verbs), ki so: can, could, may, might, will, shall, would, should, must in naklonske izraze (angl. semi-modal verbs), ki so: dare, need, ought to, used to.

Title:Modal verbs in criminal procedure act of slovenia
Abstract:This thesis deals with modal verbs in the English translation of the Criminal procedure act of the Republic of Slovenia. In the translation of this act, we searched for all modal verbs: can (lahko), could (bi lahko, bo lahko), may (lahko, sme), might (bi lahko, bo lahko), will (bo), shall (se), would (bi bilo), should (treba) and must (mora), as well as semi-modal verbs: dare, need (treba), ought to (se, bi moral, treba), used to (se sme, se lahko). The paper focuses on introducing modal verbs and establishing the share of each modal verb in the sum total of all modal verbs. These appear in three kinds of modality: deontic, dynamic and epistemic. The thesis presents the comparison of English and Slovene translations and types of modality, specifying which type is the most frequent one. The thesis includes a theoretical part and an empirical one. The theoretical part introduces and explains the term modality, modal verbs, semi-modal verbs and types of modality. The empirical part brings an analysis of all the modal verbs found in the English translation of the Criminal procedure act of Slovenia.
