Abstract:Izhodišče: Intenzivni oddelki so s svojo kompleksnostjo in zahtevnostjo obravnave pacientov eni izmed fizično najbolj zahtevnih oddelkov. Tam pride sklanjanje najbolj do izraza. Meritve so predstavljene z grafičnimi prikazi.

Title:Ergonomically incorrect approaches to handling patients and analysing loads on the lumgar spine of nurses using biomonitor me6000
Abstract:Background: Intensive care units with their complexity and challenging patient treatment are one of the most physically demanding hospital wards. Nurses generally work in a standing position and perform a wide variety of body movements. Because their lumbar spine is under considerable pressure, the correct performance of these movements is extremely important. By complying with the principles of proper bending techniques and especially load lifting, the risk of developing back problems significantly lowers. Aim: This master's thesis tries to provide answers regarding the strain on the lumbar spine of the nurses working in the intensive care unit. Methods: A questionnaire among 23 nurses was used to establish how well the nurses are acquainted with the principles of proper posture during patient handling and if they comply with these principles. With the help of Biomonitor ME6000 and the accompanying program package, we tried to establish how far down and how many times nurses bend during various tasks they perform. Results: Nurses in the intensive care unit are familiar with the principles of proper working posture and the correct way of bending; however, they only partly adhere to these principles. It is believed that nurses do not pay enough attention to proper posture during nursing interventions which results in their common back problems. Most of them have already experienced such problems (pain) and they believe that their back pain probably occurred as a consequence of their improper posture. The results of the measurements carried out with the Biomonitor ME6000 show that nurses tend to bend during all of their tasks, especially when handling bedridden patients (while making the bed, positioning the patient in bed, rotating the patient on his/her hip). In these cases, bending usually takes place; however, other tasks do also not exclude bending. The measurements are presented in graphs. Conclusion: Proper working posture of nurses is very important because the long-lasting and repeated incorrect techniques as well as forced posture contribute to an increasing number of back problems. The use of ergonomic aids can help ease the performance of nursing interventions with patients and therefore reduce back problems of nurses in the long run. We hope that the results of the measurements will have a positive impact on the nurses’ posture.
