Title:Sociological Analysis of Survivalism in the USA
Abstract:Master's Thesis is based on sociological analysis of apocalyptic groups in the USA; moreover, it divides them in two types of groups – survivalistic and non-survivalistic. Survivalistic groups are those that actively prepare for the Apocalypse. They are certain that only their members can survive the end of the world with the help of learning survival skills and accumulating goods. Non-survivalistic groups are, on the other hand, those that expect the end of the world, however, do not prepare in the same sense as survivalists (learning skills and accumulating goods). We focused on web publications of both types of groups and the frequency of their publishing. We searched for three types of elements in their publications: masculinity, their focus on economic situation and political situation. Besides analyzing both types of groups, we found concrete predictions of the end of the world that did not come true in the past four years (2014 to 2017) and concrete predictions for the years to come (2018, 2019 and 2020). We discovered that survivalists publish many more articles and videos than non-survivalists. Survivalists are also more masculine and focus more on the economic situation, whereas non-survivalists focus more on the political situation. Furthermore, we discovered that unemployment and the probability of natural disasters do not influence the emergence of apocalyptic groups. Concrete predictions of the end of the world for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 are mostly connected with the end of the world as we know it and symbols (the uprising of the Christ, the coming of the Anti-Christ, the final battle between Christ and Satan, blood moon, black moon, etc.), WW3 and natural disasters.
