Abstract:Izgorelost in depresija sta razširjena fenomena naše družbe s številnimi negativnimi posledicami.

Title:Are burnout and depression two separate symptomatic states: the role of cognitive functions
Abstract:Burnout and depression are widespread phenomena in our society that cause numerous negative consequences. Question arises whether these two conditions are separate or not. There is still no universal definition or explicitly determined diagnostic criteria for burnout, therefore it is often addressed within the range of depressive disorders. The purpose of this thesis was to thoroughly research cognitive functions of burnout or depressive subjects and to find whether there are any differences between them regarding memory, attention and executive functions. Based on the group of 54 subjects, it was established that, in comparison to the burnout subjects, the depressive ones score lower in all three cognitive tests; statistically important differences regarding memory and attention test were also shown between the depressive and the control group. It was ascertained that certain differences were shown between the burnout and the depressive subjects, as the burnout subjects made the highest number of mistakes in the attention test, while the depressive ones typically showed more frequent perseverations. In the cognitive tests, the lower score was achieved by the clinically treated subjects, especially those clinically depressive that also had the most serious psychopathological symptoms. Based on the results of our research, we may conclude that the two conditions are in fact separate; however, due to the research limitations, a larger number of studies – which would research larger groups of clinically burnout and depressive and their cognitive function differences with a longitudinal approach – would be required to draw final conclusions.
