Abstract:V magistrskem delu smo raziskovali odziv trga na objave podjetij povezane s tehnologijo veriženja blokov.

Title:The impact of blockchain technology on stock prices in the financial sector
Abstract:The topic of this master's thesis is the impact of blockchain technology related announcements on the market. Last year several such announcements caused stock prices to soar for over 100 %. We analyzed companies in the financial sector exclusively since the potential impact of blockchain technology is said to be the highest in this sector. We explained how blockchain technology works and presented current use cases and potential future applications. We performed a short literature review to also explore the potential use cases and limitations of blockchain technology in the financial sector. We looked at over 800 companies that are members of six different groups, consortiums or are partners of blockchain technology companies. After careful evaluation and application of criteria we selected 85 companies as our sample. We were able to match 81 of them to an announcement related to blockchain technology; this relation was either a new partnership, product, service or use case. We also selected an appropriate index for each company and gathered historical (stock) data for each company and index. We performed an event study to test our hypotheses. First we calculated the cumulative abnormal return (CAR) from historical data for each of our time windows; some that happened before and some after the event date (announcement) for comparison. We then processed the data using statistical methods. We found that on average the direct (in the event window) impact of a blockchain related announcement on financial sector company stock prices is negligible. We were however able to confirm 3 of our hypotheses. We found that there is a delayed effect when we analysed the time window [1,7] (7 days, beginning with the day after the announcement) and got statistically significant returns. This confirms that the market does in fact positively react to blockchain technology related announcements but with a delay. The average CAR in this time window was 1,08 %. We presumed that other factors such as a company's industry group, region, market capitalization category, number of memberships in certain blockchain related groups or consortiums and year of announcement might also affect returns. We found that companies that belong to the industry groups ''banks'' earned the highest rates of return (they had the highest average CAR compared to others). We also found that the highest CARs were earned by companies that released a blockchain related announcement in 2016.
