Title:Modelling and optimization of distribution network for the transport of fashion products
Abstract:In the bachelor thesis, we focused on the analysis of some characteristics of the distribution network of Slovenian fashion retailer, and on defining, building, and optimization of the distribution network model. Due to the complexity of the data collection process, and complex quantitative optimization methodology, we only focused on 9 distribution nodes, which adequately represent characteristics of the distribution network, and provide an interesting insight into the company, which outsources transportation to 3PL providers. In the thesis, we thoroughly presented the quantitative methodology, which is used for building of the optimization model, and we also transparently presented the data collection process, since we collected the data from the model, which was built in the geographical information system, from Slovenian fashion retailer, and from the international logistics and transportation company. On the basis of the collected data, we were able to scrutinize distribution network characteristics, build quantitative model and optimize it with the use of Excel`s Solver, and present the optimal solutions or organizational versions of the simple models (1 cost aspect) and mixed models (2 different cost aspects) of the distribution network. The most important discovery of the bachelor thesis is the fact that there are major differences in the characteristics of the data, when they are provided by a transportation (trucking) company or when they are provided by a company, which outsources its transportation to 3PL providers. In the first case (international logistics and transportation company), there is always a strong correlation between transportation distance and transportation costs (in terms of money), whereas in the other case (Slovenian fashion retailer) there is practically no correlation between the two. This is also clearly visible in the optimal solutions of the distribution network model, and the outcome strongly contradicts the results of the previous researches covering this scientific area, and thus provides the incentive and guidelines for further research work.
