Title:Rating of life quality: the peak-end rule
Abstract:Research of life quality is an important topic of the last decade, when longevity of life increases. Evaluating of life quality is a retrospective measure and as such is prone to different bias, for example to the peak-end rule, where people evaluate an episode according to two of its moments - the peak and the end and neglect the duration of the episode. In the work, I examined whether the peak-end rule applies to the evaluation of whole lives and if participants, when asked about the preference for life, choose the life according to its end and the duration of it. I conducted two web experiments. In first experiment there were 70 participants, 14 male (20%) and 56 female. This experiment represented a replication of the experiment by Diener et al. (2001). In the second experiment, there were 226 participants, 62 (27.4%) male and 164 female. Participants were randomly assigned to two different conditions that varied in valence – in one condition participants read three vignettes describing a happy life; in the second condition participants read three vignettes describing an unhappy life. Vignettes differed in ending of described lives. Results have shown that the peak-end rule applies to the happy life condition, where participants evaluate a short happy life as a more desirable than the longer life with additional less happy years in the end. The results of the unhappy life condition were not statistically significant. For preference of the question the mean values have shown that participants, when choosing the life they would like to live, consider the length and how it will end, however the results were not statistically significant.
