Title:Role of the General Matura in the Transition from Secondary to Tertiary Education
Abstract:In the master’s thesis we would like to check the role of the general matura in the transition from secondary to tertiary education. In theoretical part, we initially presented the chronological view of the development of gimnazija and the general matura in Slovene Lands and described European school systems. We analysed legal instruments, which define the general matura and its structure. We also defined goals and the grading system for the general matura subjects and levels of taxonomy, which are written down in the matura catalogue for the general matura. We also presented the grading of the general matura for candidates with special needs. We then studied the role of the general matura in the transition to tertiary education. With the help of data analysis of annual reports of the general matura from 2008 to 2017, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and Higher Education Application and Information Service we found out that general matura adequately checks the achieved goals of the general upper-secondary education. In addition, we discovered that the number of students who take the general matura is decreasing, whereas the number of students who take the vocational matura is increasing. At the same time it was discovered that due to the decline of participants in secondary education, the share of participants in tertiary education is decreasing as well. Through the years, the share of general upper-secondary graduates who took individual subjects at the general matura at a higher level of difficulty has increased, because by such means these students are able to gain a higher final grade for the general matura. It was also discovered that the share of general upper-secondary graduates who choose optional natural sciences subjects is increasing. The optional subject is selected due to their interest for that particular subject. We found out that there is a statistically positive connection between the overall achievement in the general matura and the overall achievement in the general upper-secondary education.
