Title:Etymology of the word "Rus": Historical analysis
Abstract:The paper deals with the controversy surrounding the issue of the etymology of the word Rus in the period from antiquity to the Mongol invasion of a major part of the Russian principalities, with the focus on proving the global character of the contemporary Russian and Ukrainian space. The topic is divided into several chapters, which examine and present various polemics of this topic from different perspectives during the considered period. The first chapter presents theories, among which the Norman and the anti-Norman are predominant. In the following, the language development of the word ‘Rus’ is portrayed, followed by a definition of key sources that are interesting for the topic itself, among which a source, called The Tale of Past Years, also known as the Primary Chronicle, is of great importance. That is followed by a presentation of the ancient period, in which ethic non-homogeneity is already indicated, and confirmed in the Middle Ages with a greater quantity of sources. Special attention is also devoted to the Mongols in this territory, that significantly shuffled maps on the historic parquet floor and were the initiators of new processes. For example, they helped to consolidate the Orthodox Church among peoples during their reign and that led to even stronger ties among them and to the emergence of modern nations in this area.
