Title:Composition of sow's milk in relation to body weight and suckling behaviour of piglets
Abstract:Milk composition depends on many genetic and environmental factors. Our research aimed to find relations between milk constitution, body weight (BW) and piglets' behaviour during lactation. Its subjects were five sows with nests of at least 10 piglets (N = 55), and on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th day of lactation piglets' behaviour was observed and milk samples from each teat were taken. After each observation, piglets were weighted. Stability of the suckling order increased along with the BW growth and aging and reached its climax in the second week of lactation (52%). The relation between BW and protein ratio in lactation was statistically significant negative (r = –0.31; p < 0.001). With the time component being taken into account, the same trend was discovered with body weight, i. e. negative relation through all the periods of lactation, which at the beginning of lactation and at the end was not statistically significant (p ≥ 0.05). A weak (r = 0.1094), yet statistically significant positive correlation (p = 0.001) was established between BW and lactose ratio in milk, however, it was significant only in the middle of the lactation period (7th and 14th day, p < 0.05). Similar, but stronger correlation was established in the case of suckling stability (r = 0.7943, p = 0.000).
