Title:The vietnam war as reported by The New York Times
Abstract:The French had missionary contacts with Vietnam as early as the 17th century. In the late 1800s Vietnam became a French colony, which later led to the French-Vietnamese war, which lasted until the fall of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. After this war, Vietnam split into two parts, the northern communist and southern non-communist, supported by the United States. The South was led by the corrupt Diem's government, which caused the suffering people to turn to the communist rebels of the Vietcong. This increased the influence of the Americans in the south, who began sending more and more military aid there, and with the supposed attack on two American ships in the Tonkin Bay they entered the war. In the war, the Americans had the technological advantage, which did not help much against the guerilla attacks of the People's Army. Facing decreasing support for the war at home, the Americans finally withdrew from Vietnam by 1973. In 1975, South Vietnam recognized the defeat and merged with the north, but there was still no peace.
