Abstract:Žuželke so najštevilčnejša skupina živali in poseljujejo vse kopenske in večino sladkovodnih habitatov. Hrošči obsegajo 40 % celotnega števila do sedaj opisanih živalskih vrst.

Title:Comparison of the mouthparts in selected epigean and hypogean cholevinae (coleoptera: leiodidae)
Abstract:Insects are one of the largest groups of animals. They inhabit all terrestrial and freshwater habitats. Beetles comprehend 40 % of all the animal species discovered until now. They inhabit different terrestrial habitats. Underground beetles are still poorly investigated, since most of their habitats are difficult to access. We assume that subterranean beetles evolved certain convergent morphological adaptations of the mouthparts in response to the prevalent way of feeding. In our research, we asked, whether we can eventually distinguish distinctive morphological types mouthparts in response to the habits selected species of the beetle Leiodidae family. Owing to the complexity of the mouthparts, we analysed the mandible only. The mandible consist of teeth, hairs and other structures important for recognising the feeding habits. We compared mandibles of 18 species of the Leiodidae family. We defined key points on the mandibles to compare their shapes and sizes. According to the results, we classified the 18 species into three size groups: those with small, medium-sized and large mandibles. One the other hand, we found continuous changes in the shape. We were particularly interested in the relation between the shape and the size of the mandible, on the one hand, and feeding habits of specific species, on the other hand. The shape is more or less continiuous. We discovered the relation between the life in habitats with different quantities of organic substances and the mandible's shape. By doing that, we establish the relation between the morphological characteristics of the mouthparts, on the one hand, either the type of food or feeding habits, on the other hand, of the analysed subterranean leiodid beetles.
