Abstract:Obdobje odraščanja in najstništva je najbolj občutljivo obdobje za človeka. Vsebina magistrskega dela zajema jezikoslovno in diskurzno analizo čustev v romanu The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Title:The discourse construction of emotions in the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Abstract:The period of growing up and being a teenager is the most sensitive period in one's life. During this period a human develops and formulates his character, he is very perceptive for the outer impacts, the influence of parents, schoolmates, peers. Considering that a lot of problems, which a young person confronts, are unmanaged and unaddressed, they consequently still valid for taboo themes. We want to put these problems in the foreground with the help of the story's main protagonist. The analysis showed that with the help of a special model for dealing with feelings in the novel, we can assemble a character outline of the main characters, nevertheless find also the connection with oneself, memories of youth, whether good or traumatic. The content of the master's thesis captures a linguistic and discourse analysis of feelings in the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The analysis is based on a linguistic model of functional-systemic grammar (Halliday 1994), which assumes that every sentence in the text describes a state or a process, sometimes physical activity/state or a mental activity/state. Consequently, the patterns of sentences build a context of the text as a whole. The theme of the chosen book is up to date, appealing and popular among young people, this is why we decided to analyse this particular text. We tried to figure out how does the book throughout discourse (description of participants, lexical connections among them, usage of emotional phrases in description) shows the trauma of the main protagonist and also, trauma's affect on him throughout the story, how it reflects in his reactions, feelings, mental states and relationships with other people.
