Title:Psychological Aspects of Prenatal, Intrapartum and Postnatal Care in Slovenian Prisons
Abstract:Pregnancy and childbirth present many physical and psychological challenges even for pregnant women who live in a most optimal environment. Women who during their pregnancy serve a sentence of detention or imprisonment are, on the other hand, more likely to develop various risks and complications due to their exposure to additional stressors, such as deprivation of liberty, lack of privacy, worry about their safety, inadequate nutrition, inadequate living environment, inability to exercise regularly, limited access to information about pregnancy and childbirth, separation from the family and possible removal of the child. The present thesis analyzes the mental and physical conditions of women in pregnancy with a literature review, focusing on the psychological needs of women throughout pregnancy and the negative psychological effects that might accompany pregnancy. It then continues to investigate which physical, health and psychological needs of pregnant prisoners ought to be met and which additional stressors are experienced while serving a prison sentence. Furthermore, the thesis defines in detail the safety measures used on pregnant prisoners, i.e. shackling and binding, the presence of a correctional officer and the removal of a child, and, finally, introduces support programs that reduce the negative effects of pregnancy and childbirth assistance offered to prisoners. Insight into the actual course of pregnancy management and childbirth experienced by prisoners in Slovenia has been gained through in–depth interviews with the Director of the Ig prison, a correctional officer and two imprisoned women. It turns out that the course of pregnancy and childbirth of pregnant prisoners in Slovenia is mostly comparable to that of free women, with some restrictions regarding the deprivation of liberty and the security regime under which the respective women have been serving their prison sentence. Due to a small number of pregnant inmates and inmates who give birth in prison in Slovenia, a project within which, in cooperation with the staff of the Ig women's prison, doulas could offer interactive individual assistance and care to pregnant inmates during their pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period could be established in order to alleviate the psychological and physiological problems of pregnant inmates.
