Title:Students' of pedagogy and pedagouges' self evaluation of competence in working with special needs students
Abstract:Students' of master's course of pedagogy and pedagogues' self evaluation of competence in working with learners with special needs contributes heavily to the awareness of special needs learners' knowledge. The frequency of this group of learners in Slovene elementary schools is growing; therefore, it seems appropriate to give the attention they deserve, especially when talking about school counselling, a field in which pedagogues are usually employed. Master's thesis Students of Students‘ of Pedagogy and Pedagogues‘ self Evaluation of Competence in working with Special Needs Studentscomprises of the theoretical and empirical section. In the former, we presented the historical development of pedagogy and school counselling, development of school counselling in Slovenia and the main fields of work school counsellor actually encounter. We also presented various groups of children with special needs and the legislation that is connected to the topic of this thesis. In the empirical part, we were mostly interested in the self-evaluation of competence in working with learners with special needs, that is both of students of pedagogy and pedagogues already employed in elementary schools. We discovered that employed pedagogues mark their level of competence as very high. The fact that most of them work with learners with special needs on a daily basis proves those claims. Their recommendations on what could still be improved mostly refer to additional seminars, workshops and trainings. In addition, they suggest an adjusted curriculum for learners with special needs. In the case of students of pedagogy, the results were a bit different. Only a small part of the sample actually encounters learners with special needs on a daily or weekly basis. Most of them only have the opportunity to work with such learners once a month. Results show that students of pedagogy mostly mark their level of competence as good, but not a single individual perceives his/her level of competence as excellent. This tells us that there are some imperfections in the study programme. Their recommendations on how to improve that mostly referred to the increase of student practice and handling of actual real-life cases of learners with special needs. All in all, this also shows that the best knowledge and the most progress are gained during the actual employment.
