Title:Intercultural hate speech analysis on the case of anonymous slovenian and german web comments about the refugees
Abstract:The refugee and financial crisis in Europe have, over the past ten years, caused a socio-economic change, which leans Europe to the populistic public discourse and is reflected in hate speech and intolerance toward other cultures and languages. This master’s thesis analyses the occurrence of hate speech online in three selected media, namely two German-speaking (Austrian Krone.at and German Focus.de) and one Slovenian (Rtvslo.si), in the period from 2015 to the beginning of 2018 and explores as well how translator tackle the hate speech translations. The aim and purpose of the master’s thesis is to show the meaning of hate speech in the Slovenia, German and Austrian portal as a case study and the expansion of populism and xenophobia as a result of the refugee crisis. In the empirical part of the thesis, we presented and analysed the translations from the students of the Department of Translation studies and analysed the differences in the translation strategy, experiences and relevance of the translations. We also prepared a Slovene-German glossary of hate terminology, which was found in the empirical research of the selected web portals in Slovenia, Germany and Austria. In the first part of the master’s thesis, we presented theoretical basis, with which we want to define the meaning of hate speech in the international environment and discourse, and how the hate speech is reflected in translating as an intercultural activity, which enables communication between different languages and cultures. In the second part, translations of both groups of translators and the analysis of their translations will be presented on the basis of a pilot project with undergraduate students of the study programme “Medjezikovne študije – nemščina” and postgraduate students of the study programme “Prevajanje in tolmačenje” at the University of Maribor. In the final and concluding phase of the master’s thesis, we will present the Slovenian-German glossary of the most common hate speech expressions, which appeared in the Slovenian as well as in the German and Austrian web portals.
